The Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Medal is awarded biennially to Fulbright alumni whose career, civic and educational accomplishments are judged to have expanded boundaries of human wisdom, empathy, and perception. Poet Rita Dove, composer Philip Glass, educator and civil rights activist John D. Maguire, and entrepreneur Ruth M. Owades received the 2009 Medal on May 12 in Washington, D.C.
